Displaying the American flag is pretty ubiquitous across the country right
now, from cars, windows, and private homes, to corporations, freeway
overpasses, and lemonade stands, and I imagine that as we approach the one
year anniversary of September 11 such displays might intensify. What I'd
like to see is photographic documentation of alternative or
counter-expressions of patriotism, be they the American flag juxtaposed to
other national flags or, better, displays of cultural and ethnic national
pride that do not involve the American flag nor indeed any other
militaristic or xenophobic exhibition. Evidence of patriotism through
pacifism or celebration of regional communities across the country would be
especially interesting. |
