| Mormonism was 'born' in the U.S. around 1825 or so. Joseph
Smith started seeing angels and having revelations and found the gold plates
that the Book of Mormon was translated from. This all started in Palmyra,
New York which is Near Rochester.
As instructed by an angel, Joseph Smith went to a high hill near the
Village of Manchester. "On the west slope he found a large rounded
stone. Underneath he discovered a stone box containing the plates of gold
and an instrument later used to aid in their translation. This instrument apparently consisted
of two transparent stones attached like eyeglasses to a breast plate and
which was identified by the angel as the biblical Urim and Thummim."
This site where the plates were found has always been a fascinating image
for me and the odd translating strap on contraption used has occurred
in my work over and over again in various ways.
Go to the location of this hill near where Joseph Smith found these plates
and translated them with the contraption that is moderately described.
While seeking this location out you should think about what it is you
believe in most. What is the one thing that you truly believe in?
Once you know what this belief is start designing your own "translating
tools" that would assist you in getting closer to that belief or
understanding it on a deeper level. Make thumbnail sketches while on the
road as images surface. Start collecting materials and found objects that
will allow you to make the contraption a physical reality.
When you get to the hill put the contraption on.
Identify a sound that relates to the site.
Make that sound for one minute.
Identify an action that relates to how your body feels at that moment.
Make that action for one minute.
Recall a time when your belief set you apart from a group.
Tell that story for one minute.
For the last minute make the sound, the action, and tell the story all
at the same time.
